Hex Wives #1 (Vertigo Comics)

Vertigo’s new series Hex Wives couldn’t have been released on a better day. The Ben Blacker and Mirka Andolfo series, an interesting mix of witchcraft and The Stepford Wives, is a pretty fun and slightly spooky book. Unfortunately though, it’s more interesting when it’s focused on the history of the two leads than the actual plot.

TV Review: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina!

People who follow my column know that I’m a big fan of Sabrina The Teenage Witch and her comic The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. So naturally, I was very much looking forward to Netflix’s series based on the Archie Horror series. My expectations were high, possibly even TOO high, but after devouring the series over the past three days, I’m happy to say that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is not only one of the best debuts of the year, but also something that worked well to revitalize the franchise for a new generation.

TV Review: Daredevil Season Three!

I’ll be honest, the last few seasons of the various Marvel Netflix shows have been a bit of a slog. Ever since Defenders, it seemed like all of the various shows, from Luke Cage to Iron Fist to even Jessica Jones started spinning their wheels, and eventually they became to feel like a real slog to get through. Thankfully though, Daredevil‘s third season has come along and not only rejuvenated that show after an uneven second season, it’s also reignited my interest in the other Marvel Netflix shows (well, the remaining ones, that is).

Books of Magic #1 (Vertigo)

Vertigo’s relaunch continues on with Books of Magic. The continuation of Neil Gaiman’s “Harry Potter before there was Harry Potter” story, the new Books of Magic finds Timothy Hunter still trying to figure out the magical abilities he’s destined to have, and also deal with the death of his mother. It’s an intriguing start to be sure, but Kat Howard and Tom Fowler’s opening issue relies on a lot of background knowledge about the original Books of Magic to make it really enjoyable for new readers.

The original Halloween is a stone cold classic, and it’s not just one of my favorite horror movies, it’s one of my favorite movies period. John Carpenter built an amazingly eerie film, and all others that came after it, including the many sequels, fail to live up to it. So the news that David Gordon Green of all people would be helming a new sequel/reboot, with Danny McBride cowriting it with him, gave me some cause for concern. The guy behind Eastbound and Down and Vice Principals was going to helm a Halloween movie?

Well, I should’ve trusted this Green guy, cause Halloween (2018) (for the purposes of this review I’m calling it H18 from now on) is pretty damn fantastic.

No Vertigo relaunch is complete without a new Lucifer series. The Sandman spin-off returns, with a new #1, a new creative team in the form of Dan Watters and Sebastian and Max Fiumara, and the Lord of Hell depowered and trapped in a world he doesn’t understand.

Suicide Gunn

Ever since he was fired from Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 3, the nerd world at large has been wondering just what would become of James Gunn. Would he retreat from the public eye indefinitely? Go back to the smaller genre films that he was known for before Guardians? Or would he jump ship for a rival studio?

Well, this week we got the answer, and it’s option three.

Murder Falcon #1 (Image Comics)

After Extremity, I made the decision to follow writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson on any book he decided to work on. While I was definitely expecting something crazy for his next project, in no way was I prepared for Murder Falcon. A raucous love letter to all things Metal and Rock, Murder Falcon #1 is a jolt of intensity on every panel, and it’s one of the best debut issues of the year.

The Return of the Mandalorian

After a long wait, we finally have some details on John Favreau’s Star Wars show. Titled The Mandalorian, the show will focus on a “lone gunslinger type” navigating the Star Wars universe after the fall of the Empire. It sounds like a really cool idea for a show, and also just the kind of thing to pique my interest enough to subscribe to another streaming service.

Superior Octopus #1 (Marvel Comics)

It’s hard to think of a character that’s had more changes in the past decade than Otto Octavius. He’s gone from a dying husk, to taking over Spider-Man’s body, to having his consciousness put into a robot body, and is now in a NEW cloned body of Peter Parker with a new name and mission. While it’s enough to make a newcomer’s head spin, if you’ve been following Otto’s story like I have, it’s turned him into a character that’s far more nuanced than just being a Spider-Man villain, and he’s ripe for an ongoing series to flesh out his character. While Christos Gage and Mike Hawthorne’s Superior Octopus isn’t the start of a new ongoing yet (Superior Spider-Man, from the same creative team, won’t start for a few months), it does give us a neat look into the character’s current goings on, and how he’ll play into the Spider-Geddon event later on.
