Movie Review: Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny!

MOVIE REVIEW!

Indiana Jones and The Dial Of Destiny (2023)

Starring: Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelson, Boyd Holbrook

Directed By: James Mangold

MINOR SPOILERS

A while back, I made a joke tweet saying “2023: The Summer my heroes got old” with a picture of Michael Keaton’s Batman and Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones . Yet, underneath that joke post is something serious, as I’ve been feeling the age of my nerdery more and more as time and franchises move on. How many Batmans have I seen in my lifetime? How much nerd rage have I witnessed (and been a part of of)? And In terms of Indiana Jones, “do I really want to see another movie with Ford in the role”? After fifteen years since 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (a film not as bad as the reputation would have you believe, but also still not very good), even the most die hard of Ford fans like myself are kind going in with lowered expectations, and really out of a love for Harrison. But shockingly, Dial of Destiny serves as a fitting, if imperfect, send off for the character and his world, giving Indiana Jones his own Logan.

Movie Review: The Flash

MOVIE REVIEW!

The Flash (2023)

Starring: Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle, Ben Affleck

Directed by: Andy Muschietti

What do a ton of release delays, a controversial lead actor, multiple creative stops and starts, and two eras of Batman actors have in common? This year’s The Flash, the latest entry in WB’s long suffering DCEU. Touted as the “most important” movie of Marvel’s biggest rival’s movie verse (at least until it’s rebooted under James Gunn), The Flash has had a lot of eyes on it for some time now, not in the least because of star Ezra Miller’s mental health issues that have lead to a whole mess of legal problems. But early buzz was touting it as “one of the best superhero movies ever”, and even though a lot of that was coming from the types of people who need to say that (and even Tom Cruise, weirdly), the return of the Batman of my youth, Michael Keaton, is a big draw. It’s one that the studio has wisely played up in the marketing of the film, turning attention away from the title character in a way that is honestly hilarious at times. But divorced from the long road to production and it’s star, is The Flash in the same league as Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight, and Logan?

Movie Review: Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

Movie Review!

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023)

Starring: Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Oscar Isaac, Jake Johnson

Directed By: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Power, Justin K. Thompson

MINOR SPOILERS

Back in 2018, no on expected a movie like Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. While it was getting buzz in the nerd circles for the first movie appearance of Miles Morales, mainstream and nerd audiences were blown away by the storytelling and distinct, groundbreaking visual style contained within the movie. Fast forward a few years and the film not only has an Academy Award, but it’s also in the contention for the best Spider-Man movie ever made. With all of those accolades, it’s no surprise that the sequel, Across The Spider-Verse has a considerable amount of eyes on it compared to the first go around. And shockingly, it’s just as good as the previous film!
