Jughead: The Hunger #1 (Archie Comics)

The Archie Horror line has had some great series, but the one area they’ve been lacking in is consistency when it comes to release dates. As great as Afterlife with Archie and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina are, the fact that their publishing schedule is pretty lax (to put it mildly) makes for a pretty frustrating experience as a fan. With the arrival of Jughead: The Hunger, a new monthly series spun out of the one-shot released a few months ago, I’m hopeful that the Archie Horror brand, now called Árchie’s Madhouse, can get the scheduling train back on track, especially because this opening issue is pretty spectacular.

And while you may be putting the final touches on your costume, loading up on candy, or binging your favorite spooky movies, there’s still plenty of other ways to get into the Halloween spirit, and one of my favorite ways to do it is by rereading one of my favorite Batman stories: Red Rain.

The Mighty Thor #700

Part of Marvel’s “Legacy” rebranding is a chance to go back to the classic numbering for a majority of their titles, and lucky for them The Mighty Thor was at issue 700. With that comes the start of Jason Aaron’s “The Death Of The Mighty Thor”, which is a pretty ominous title for a lot of reasons. Will this storyline kill off the Jane Foster Thor, who’s been the welder of Mjolnir for the past few years now? Or will Thor Odinson go down? OR will all of the Thors featured in this issue, from Jane Foster to Odinson to War Thor, go down in flames? We don’t get any real clues, but we do get a whole lot of story in this special, double sized issue.

Pedal to the Metal

Event comics aren’t supposed to be fun anymore. The past few years have seen countless tie-ins and additional issues with prices jacked up so you “have to find out what happens” regardless of the comic costing you almost triple the usual cover price. After Secret Empire, Civil War II, Convergence, and a host of other events, you wouldn’t be surprised to hear long time comic readers say that they “needed a break” from the world of mainstream comics. But then Dark Nights: Metal came along, and bucked the trend completely. Here’s an event that’s not only selling well, but a massive hit with readers. Lately I’ve seen fans request not only the main Metal series, but the tie in issues too, which is one of the biggest signs of a successful event for any publisher. From the one shots detailing the different demonic Batmans that appeared at the end of the second issue to the ”Gotham Resistance” storyline that ran thought Teen Titans, Nightwing, Suicide Squad, and Green Arrow, it’s been difficult to keep up with the growing demand for this series. So what’s the difference?

The Amazing Spider-Man #789

Spider-Man’s had it very easy lately. Ever since he became the new Tony Stark of the Marvel universe and went global, Spidey’s been a lot less “friendly neighborhood”. Everything was coming up Parker…until now. Dan Slott had his fun making Spidey a globe-trotting super hero who hangs out with Mockingbird, but we all knew that the shoe would drop on ol’ Peter Parker at some point, and with Amazing Spider-Man #789, it finally does.

Oh The Inhumanity

Let’s get this out of the way right now: Inhumans is not a good show. It’s not the hottest take, I know, but its worth mentioning once again for anyone thinking “well, maybe it’s not as bad as people are saying”.

It is.

Batman: White Knight #1 (of ) (DC Comics)

There have been countless classic Batman tales: The Dark Knight Returns, The Long Halloween, the entirety of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s run. Hell, even The Dark Knight counts as an incredible Batman story, despite being a movie and not a comic. With Sean Murphy’s Batman: White Knight, the hype was building that this story could be just as good as those other classics. And now that it’s out I can tell you this: the hype is real.

Of Ricks and Mortys

Now that the dust has settled on Rick and Morty’s third season, it’s easy to say that this season was arguably the strongest season the show’s had. Every episode had some of the craziest science fiction ideas ever put on a TV screen, rivaling Sci-Fi master classes like Doctor Who, Star Trek, and Alien. Hell, many times some of the best and brightest ideas were basically thrown away as background gags or quick, under minute sight gags. But like everything that’s super popular, there’s always going to be some backlash, and in a weird turn of events, that backlash wasn’t because of  the show, but because of the fans of the show.
