COMIC REVIEWS!!!

Marvel’s “All New, All Different” relaunch has done a lot of strange things. In fact, some might accuse them of just throwing ideas at the wall to see if they’ll stick, which may be the reason for Old Man Logan, the new ongoing series that places the former Wolverine who starred in Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s fantastic original series into the main Marvel 616 (sorry, Marvel PRIME) universe. It seems like a gimmick, and it is. But with writer Jeff Lemire and artist Andrea Sorrentino on the series, it’s able to transcend the gimmickiness of its premise and plant the seeds for a pretty intriguing tale. Of Rebirths and Relaunches

DC_RebirthLast Friday the comic book world was abuzz with rumors that DC Comics, the company that made waves years ago with the “New 52” reboot, was planning to relaunch once more. Yes, the company that stated they’d never do a major relaunch after their reboot is now planning to do just that. If rumors are to be believed, the focus of this relaunch, or “Rebirth” as Co-Publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee have started teasing it as, would have a larger bent towards characters that have films and TV shows based around them as opposed to characters that well, don’t. Task Force X Assembles

squad-gposter-smallThis week, WB and the CW aired their DC universe special, and with it, we got another look at the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. Yes, we had one trailer already, but since that was a Comic Con exclusive that was released after it was leaked online, this is the first real, legit trailer for the second film in WB’s DC cinematic universe.

And it’s pretty awesome. Read the rest of this entry

Civil War…Again.

marvel10n-5-webLast weekend, the first details on Civil War 2 hit, and…it’s pretty much exactly what you’re expecting if you’ve read any of Marvel’s events in the past five years. In fact, it sounds like it’s a combination of not only the original Civil War, but also Avengers vs. X-Men. The plot for Civil War 2 revolves around the arrival of a new super powered being than can see into the future, which sounds an awful lot like the plot for Avengers vs. X-Men (just swap “new phoenix host” with “new super powered being”). Naturally, this causes a few of the Marvel heroes deciding that they can use this power to prevent crimes before they happen, while others believe that they can’t have this amount of power. Because this is a Marvel tie-in, they’ll be duking it out before coming to a resolution.

Oh, and someone will die. Read the rest of this entry

MILD SPOILERS

At long last, the finale of Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic’s Secret Wars has arrived. The long delayed concluding chapter has the inenviable task of wrapping up a major event and setting up the status quo that Marvel fans have been aware of since October. And for the most part, Secret Wars succeeds. It definitely feels a little rushed, but when compared to other Marvel events (Age of Ultron, I’m looking at you), Secret Wars is one of the better event stories that Marvel has published recently. Obi-Wan_and_Anakin_1_CoverStar Wars: Obi-Wan and Anakin #1 (Marvel Comics)

My thoughts on the Star Wars prequels are….complicated. So when Obi-Wan and Anakin, the latest Marvel Star Wars miniseries was announced, I was hesitant. However, once I saw that Lando writer Charles Soule and Shattered Empire artist Marco Checchetto were on the book, my interest went up considerably. And while this opening issue is pretty light in the plot department, the character work more than makes up for it. Read the rest of this entry
