The Marvel Cinematic universe has had no shortage of content this year, and no shortage of new superheroes. But what makes Ms. Marvel stand out from the rest of the batch is the sheer power of Kamala Khan, the MCU’s first Pakistani superhero, and a standout perfromance from Iman Vellani. Unfortunately, even that star-making performance isn’t enough to help the show overcome some truly baffling storytelling decisions and the one thing that seemingly every Marvel show has: pacing issues.

Way back in the halcyon days of 2017, New Zealand director Taika Waititi delivered the jolt Marvel’s God of Thunder needed with Thor: Ragnarok. A wild and irreverent take on Thor and his Asgardian pals, the film stands as one of the major successes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and revitalized the character for fans and the actor who played him, Chris Hemsworth. Given the success of Ragnarok, it’s no surprise that Marvel would recruit Waititi for another go-round with Thor, but with no Endgame to build to, can lightning strike twice?
