Like Star Wars before him, the mighty Conan has made his return to Marvel Comics from Dark Horse. And also like Star Wars, he’s got Jason Aaron writing his new adventures. But that’s where the similarities end, because make no mistake, Conan The Barbarian, featuring art by Mahmud Asrar, is a truly brutal book, and marks a triumphant return to the publisher that made him famous in comics. Old Man Logan # 16 (Marvel Comics)
If rumors (and Marvel solicitations) are to be believed, Old Man Logan will be nearing its final issue shortly. Which is a shame, since the Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino comic series has been a surprisingly great ride. The two have taken a concept that should’ve been terrible, but somehow made it into one of the best titles in Marvel’s stable. Lemire and Sorrentino have sent the universe-displaced Logan on some pretty wild adventures, including a trip to Japan and fighting against Vampires, but now? He’s heading into space. Secret Wars #9 (of 9) (Marvel Comics)
MILD SPOILERS
At long last, the finale of Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic’s Secret Wars has arrived. The long delayed concluding chapter has the inenviable task of wrapping up a major event and setting up the status quo that Marvel fans have been aware of since October. And for the most part, Secret Wars succeeds. It definitely feels a little rushed, but when compared to other Marvel events (Age of Ultron, I’m looking at you), Secret Wars is one of the better event stories that Marvel has published recently. The Walking Dead #139 (Image Comics)
The Walking Dead has been in an interesting place for the past few issues. Since the time jump, we’ve been introduced to new characters, seen old favorites in new positions of power, and haven’t seen hide nor hair of Michonne. Rick Grimes, the leader of our band of survivors, was in the first two issues of the time jump, but has barely been seen since then. It almost seems like Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard are slowly changing the focus of the book to Carl Grimes. However, Walking Dead #139 finally turns the attention onto the elder Grimes, giving us greater insight into this new world for the Walking Dead, and finally shows us some other familiar faces as well. Spider-Man and the X-Men #1 (Marvel Comics)
Spider-Man wears a lot of hats. It seems like creators thrive on giving the character not just one, or two, or three jobs, but more like seventeen at times. Right now he’s in charge of a company, a member of the Avengers, and helping out in the “inversion” in AXIS. And now writer Elliot Kalan and artist Marco Failla are adding another title to the Wall-Crawler’s long list of superlatives: Guidance Counselor for the Jean Grey School Of Higher Learning, as Spidey joins up with the X-Men in the new ongoing Spider-Man and the X-Men #1. The Amazing Spider-Man #5 (Marvel Comics)
Spidey’s “Original Sin” tie-in continues with Amazing Spider-Man #5, which picks up right where writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos left Spidey last month: on top of a rooftop, making out with Silk, the mysterious Spider-Woman that Peter Parker found last issue. However, before things get really hot and heavy, Peter puts the stop on things once he realizes that Silk knows his secret identity. After asking her questions about her family, Peter brings Silk back to his apartment so they can look for them, but they end up making out again. Read the rest of this entry
