Movie Review: X-Men: Apocalypse

My overall anticipation for X-Men: Apocalypse has been pretty muted. Despite being a big fan of X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past, I couldn’t help but feel like something was missing from the promotional materials that I have seen for Bryan Singer’s latest X-opus. Perhaps it’s because Batman V Superman and Captain America: Civil War were the bigger comic book movies of the year, or maybe it’s because of the Ivan Ooze-ness of the first picture of Apocalypse, but something just wasn’t clicking for me. To borrow a phrase from another Marvel franchise, my “spider-sense was tingling”. Regardless, I’m a huge fan of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy’s takes on Magneto and Professor Charles Xavier, so I went into this movie knowing that at least part of my ticket purchase was going towards them. To say that X-Men: Days of Future Past is director Bryan Singer’s apology for leaving the franchise to direct Superman Returns is an understatement. Deftly balancing the cast of the original X-Men trilogy of films and the cast from First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past is an incredible achievement in the fact that it not only wraps up the past films in a satisfying way, but also sets up some potentially awesome things for X-Men films to come. If you’ll excuse me, I’d like to use this opportunity for one last swipe at Sony’s handling of my beloved Spider-Man: this is how it’s done Sony! PAY ATTENTION! Read the rest of this entry
