At long last, we’ve finally got our first look at Robert Pattinson’s Batman outfit, and it looks…pretty sweet! Eschewing the more grounded take that Batman V Superman had (and I was a fan of), Pattinson’s new Batsuit is like a cool mix between the Arkham Games and a little bit of Sean Murphy’s White Knight look, and it’s definitely something that fits right into what director Matt Reeves described as “something Bruce Wayne would make for himself”. Now that Robert Pattinson has signed on to answer the bat-signal, it’s time to start filling out the rest of Gotham, and what better place to start than with one of the Batman’s closet allies, Commissioner Gordon. While many were expecting that we’d see J.K. Simmons’ return to the role after Justice League, but after that film’s underperformance, it looks like Gordon is getting put into the reboot machine as well, and now he’s being played by none other than Westworld‘s Jeffrey Wright. After some unverified reports a few weeks ago, we can finally confirm who our next Batman will be. After months of speculation, the next Dark Knight is none other than Robert Pattinson, the man made famous thanks to the Twilight Saga. Ben Affleck has left The Batman.
Well, not AS Batman. Just as the director of The Batman.
While this news is disappointing, it’s not all that surprising. Affleck has been pretty dodgy about answering if he would direct a solo Batman movie going as far back as when he was first cast in the role. After the release of Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad (and the receptions they got), that demand only intensified. Affleck was fielding “when are you working on Batman” for months, and it reached a fever pitch while he was promoting Live By Night, his latest directorial effort. Add in the fact that the head of Warner Bros was pretty adamant that Ben Affleck would be directing The Batman, even going so far as to announce it at a trade show without talking with the star in the first place, and it’s easy to see why Affleck would walk from the directing duties.
