Now that Morbius, the next Sony movie that’s a spin off that won’t feature Spider-Man, is finished and being released later this year we finally have an idea of what’s in store for us when it comes to the post- New Deal that Sony and Disney have made. As depicted in the first trailer for the film, Jared Leto’s Michael Morbius walks down a hallway, and we hear the sound of Michael Keaton, and then see Keaton himself address the living vampire in an obvious ploy to connect this film to the larger MCU. And just like that, Spidey is back in the MCU.
In a surprising turn of events (okay, not THAT surprising), Sony and Marvel Studios have renegotiated their deal to keep Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU for another two movies, and they’ve even got the third film on the schedule for 2021, a mere two years away. After nearly a month passing with the deal seemingly dying, many (myself included) resigned themselves to the fact that the deal was over and done with, and that we’d have to live with a Spidey in a post-MCU world. The Marvel Cinematic Universe could have a Spider-Man shaped hole in its future depending on how the current negotiations between Disney and Sony go. We’ve got a new look at Spider-Man: Far From Home in the latest trailer, but one of the biggest revelations isn’t just how the MCU has moved on from the heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. No, it’s the fact that Jake Gyllenhaal’s Quentin Beck (aka Mysterio) is apparently from an alternate Earth. According to the exposition from Nick Fury, Thanos’ “snap”, or one of the other ones, caused a few portals to open in the MCU, causing Beck and the Elemental creatures he and Spidey will fight to arrive on our Earth. It’s an interesting spin to the Mysterio character, and could pave the way for the X-Men and the Fantastic Four to make their way into the MCU proper.
If it were true. Read the rest of this entry
