My thoughts on the Star Wars prequels are….complicated. So when Obi-Wan and Anakin, the latest Marvel Star Wars miniseries was announced, I was hesitant. However, once I saw that Lando writer Charles Soule and Shattered Empire artist Marco Checchetto were on the book, my interest went up considerably. At long last, Dark Knight 3: The Master Race has arrived. The Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello penned series has a metric ton of hype around it, but many (myself included) are wary after Miller’s The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Sure, with Azzarello helping on the scripts and Andy Kubert on art, it’s a good chance we won’t be getting DKSA again, but there’s always the possibility that we could get something even worse as well. Like any issue of Batman, issue 40 has a ton of hype around it. However, what makes this issue of the Dark Knight’s adventures stand out over other issues by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo is the fact that this is the finale of the “Endgame”, the massive story arc involving the alleged final battle between Batman and his arch-nemesis The Joker. Now that the final part of the storyline has finally hit shelves, it’s time to delve deep into the issue and see if this is the final battle of The Dark Knight and The Clown Prince of Crime.
