Comic Reviews: Savage Avengers and DCEased!

COMIC REVIEWS!!

SAV_AVENGERS_1Savage Avengers #1 (Marvel Comics)

We all knew it was only a matter of time for Marvel to have Conan The Barbarian cross over into the Marvel universe, but I don’t think anyone was expecting it to happen this soon, and in a title like Savage Avengers. A new series from Gerry Duggan and Mike Deodato. Jr, this offshoot of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes brings together Wolverine, The Punisher, Venom, Doctor Voodoo, Elektra, and Conan the Barbarian to take on only the most brutal of missions. No, they’re not officially sanctioned (yet), and yes, at first glance making Conan an Avenger is a major eye-roll moment. But surprisingly, this opening issue isn’t just chock full of ridiculous action, it’s also one of the most fun comics of the year. Read the rest of this entry

Comic Reviews: Thanos and Green Arrow!

COMIC REVIEWS!!!

indexThanos #1 (Marvel Comics)

For the most part, super villain comics don’t usually work. It’s difficult to follow the adventures of a bad guy who’s more than likely going to lose by the series’ end. However, one of the few bright spots of Marvel’s recent output has been their focus on villain-centered comics. Magneto, Carnage, the Kingpin miniseries, and Infamous Iron Man have twisted the idea of who we should be rooting for in a fun way, and now it’s time for Marvel’s biggest bad to get the spotlight. With Jeff Lemire and artist Mike Deodato at the reins, Thanos looks to have all the ingredients to make for a pretty good Marvel series. Read the rest of this entry

Comic Reviews: Star Wars: Vader Down and Huck!

COMIC REVIEWS!!

download Star Wars: Vader Down #1 (Marvel)

For being the first big Marvel Star Wars event, “Vader Down” has a pretty small-scale plot: Darth Vader is marooned on a planet housing a Rebel fueling facility. With Rebel forces surrounding him, the Dark Lord of the Sith has to fight his way off the planet, and while we KNOW he’ll be fine, that doesn’t mean that Jason Aaron and Mike Deodato’s kick off special issue isn’t a blast to read. The WORST Nerd Things of 2014!

1343924242-angry_supermanLast week had the typical “Best Nerd Things of 2014”, so now, it’s time for the real fun: the WORST nerd things of 2014. Yes, these are the movies, TV shows, video games, and comics that made my blood boil to molten lava, my head feel like it wanted to implode, and my nerd rage levels to reach almost Berserker. So, without further ado, we might as well get the biggest offender out of the way, the worst comic book movie of the year (in my opinion)… Read the rest of this entry

Comic Reviews: The Death of Wolverine and Original Sin!

COMIC REVIEWS!

Death-of-Wolverine-McNiven-coverThe Death of Wolverine #1 (of 4) (Marvel Comics)

 MINOR SPOILERS

Marvel’s definitely pulling out all the stops for The Death of Wolverine; The first issue of the weekly event features an impressive chrome cover, Steve McNiven as the artist, and a ton of “bonus features”. Unfortunately those bonus features make up more than the actual story within the issue, and don’t really justify the $4.99 cover price. Read the rest of this entry

Comic Reviews: Original Sin, Red Claw, and Futures End!

COMIC REVIEWS!!!

ORIGINAL_SIN_ELEMENTSOriginal Sin #1 (of 8) (Marvel Comics)

The next big Marvel event is HERE! Original Sin, written by Jason Aaron and featuring art by Mike Deodato, kicks off today, and so far it’s a pretty cool murder mystery. Someone has killed Uatu the Watcher, and it’s up to some of Marvel’s top heroes to piece together who killed the big bald guy.

I’ll refrain from the major spoilers for this issue, but I will say that this is one of the better starts to a Marvel event. Jason Aaron doesn’t waste any time setting up this mystery, and gets to the death of Uatu fairly quickly. The stage is set for our heroes from that point, with Captain America calling on the retired Nick Fury (the old white guy one) to assemble a group of heroes to try and find the killer.
