To say that Doctor Strange is a gamble for Marvel Studios is an understatement. Yes, this is the same studio that took The Guardians of the Galaxy from a bunch of “nerd only” characters into full-fledged mainstream hits, but amidst third installments in the Captain America and Thor franchises (as well as facing competition from WB’s DC films), starting up another character would seem like a risky move. But amazingly, Doctor Strange is another solid film from Marvel Studios that offers a ton of memorable moments, even if the story feels like one you’ve seen before. Read the rest of this entry
Last week, Marvel fired the returning shot in what will now be known as the “Great Comic Book Movie Wars”. After Warner Bros.’ announcement of their slate of DC comics based movies, Marvel countered with a massive event unveiling their “Phase 3” movies, including the film debuts of Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and the Inhumans.
It’s certainly ambitious on both studios’ parts. However, I have to give the edge to Marvel, and not because I’ve always leaned more towards Marvel than DC (Batman aside). Marvel has had huge success with their movies, while Warner Bros has only had one film out, and Man Of Steel wasn’t a movie that excited the world like Iron Man did back in 2008. I’d consider Inhumans to be the hardest sell for “normies”, but then again, now that Guardians of the Galaxy has become the highest grossing film of the year, there’s no way to not expect every one of these films to do great business at the box office.
