indexSpider-Man: Life Story #1 (of 6) (Marvel)

Unlike other Spider-Man events, Spider-Man: Life Story is telling the tale of Peter Parker in real time, allowing the character to grow and evolve over the decades. This gives writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Mark Bagley the chance to show readers something that rarely happens in comics: a character that grows and changes as the years go on. While Life Story #1 only touches on Peter Parker as a teenager in the 60’s, it paints a much different picture on the wall-crawler than the ones we read from Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The current Venom run is doing some pretty incredible things with the character, exploring the history of the symbiote and it’s long connection with the universe. Which makes Venom: the First Host, a new miniseries from Mike Costa and Mark Bagley, a weird one. While it’s showing off a new part of the history of Eddie Brock’s “other”, the fact that we’re getting some additional “never before seen” history behind the creature at the same time as the current run on the character makes The First Host seem repetitive, and if I’m being honest, a little boring too. It’s pretty strange that DC didn’t have a Supergirl series on the racks when her TV show debuted last year. Luckily for them though, DC Rebirth is here to give new Supergirl fans an easy entry point into the Girl of Steel’s comic book adventures. Written by Steve Orlando and drawn by Emanuela Lupacchino, Supergirl Rebirth is the perfect jumping on point for fans of the TV series, even if it does go a little too fast. I’ll be honest. I was planning on skipping the upcoming “Avengers: Standoff” event. Call it being uninterested, not thinking that this was a “major event”, or plain old event fatigue, there just wasn’t anything that I thought was appealing about Nick Spencer’s upcoming crossover storyline.

But then I read this. Read the rest of this entry
