2017: An Embarrassment of (Nerd) Riches

2017-superhero-movies-slice-600x200We are in a golden age of comic book movies. Sure, that’s not a huge statement to make, since Marvel Studios and other production companies have been pumping out movies for ten plus years now. But has there ever been a wide variety of GOOD comic book movies like we’ve had in 2017? Starting with Logan in March, every single comic book film released so far this year has been a hit both commercially and critically. But it’s not just the box office that’s making me think back and write this column. No, it’s what these films are saying that makes them so important. Read the rest of this entry

Let’s Talk About X, Baby

legionYes, this is another column about Logan. But more specifically, it’s about the impact that Logan, Deadpool, and FX’s Legion show have had on the X-Men franchise at Fox. All three of these properties are wildly different, but they share three things: they’re entertaining, have a very clear vision, and are completely different from any other X-Men product Fox has produced.  In an entertainment world that has valued the idea of “shared universes”, you would think that this strategy would work counter for the studio, but I honestly thing it’s emboldened them to try new things, and maybe even show Fox that there’s no need for the X-Men movies to try and copy what Marvel and Warner Bros are doing.  Read the rest of this entry

The World of Logan

logan-x-men-comics-001-1280x535SPOILERS (For real, this article is one big spoiler for Logan, proceed at your own risk!)

By now you probably are all aware of my thoughts on Logan, the final movie to star Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (if you didn’t, read my review. I’ll wait). It’s a superbly haunting movie that stays with you, and gets better the more you see it. Director James Mangold and Hugh Jackman crafted the perfect send off for Wolverine, and created a film that simply couldn’t be done at any other point in the X-Men franchise’s history. Movie Review: Logan!

logan_2017_posterLogan (2017)

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrooke

Directed by: James Mangold

MINOR SPOILERS

Very few times we get a comic book movie that not only defines the genre, it elevates it to a whole other level. The Dark Knight did this, as did The Avengers (and some could say Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy, or really any Marvel Studios major release). Well, we can now add another film to that list, because I can honestly say that Logan, the final film to star Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, is one of those films. It’s somber and hopeful, as well as violent and heartfelt. For a final bow, Jackman and director James Mangold pulled out all the stops, and crafted a film that doesn’t feel like anything else in the stable of X-Men films by Fox. Read the rest of this entry

A New World, A New Logan

landscape-1484835387-screen-shot-2017-01-19-at-141255One of my most anticipated movies of 2017 is Logan. The last movie featuring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine truly looks like it could be the type of Superhero movie that elevates the genre, like The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, and The Avengers have done. It has a very unique mood and tone judging by the trailers, and in all honesty, I think it could even get nominated for some awards when the time comes.

However, there is one weird thing that sticks out with Logan, and it has to do with the ever-changing timeline of Fox’s franchise. Read the rest of this entry

Looking Ahead To 2017!

27046534534059ff73a97ojpg-bf6797_765wWell, we made it. 2016 is now in the rearview mirror, and it’s full steam ahead to 2017. While this year will still feature some trying times for some of us, at least there will be plenty of things to distract us from reality. In fact, you might think that there’s TOO much stuff to distract us coming in 2017. Luckily for you, I’ve got my most anticipated things coming our way in 2017 to help you figure what you should really get excited for! Read the rest of this entry

The Man Called Logan

cuaiczwueaaid_w-jpg-largeAt long last, we finally have some information on the final Wolverine movie. It’s been some time since we had any real news about the movie, and with the March release date coming up, many of us were wondering if we’d EVER get a trailer, pictures, or even a synopsis on Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Logan. Well, we’ve finally gotten some info on the movie, and it’s…different. Read the rest of this entry
