X-Men Prime #1 (Marvel Comics)
Now that the dust has settled on IvX, it’s time for Marvel to start revving up for the next installment of the X-Men franchise, RessurXion. Of course, this means it’s time for a special one-shot issue that will set the stage for the upcoming X-Men books coming your way next month. International Iron Man #1(Marvel Comics)
Spin-off series are always a bit of a hard sell. Sure, when you have one or two series for a character like Spider-Man or Batman it makes sense, since other series can cover more aspects of the character, but most times the spin-offs don’t really justify their existence, which is definitely the case for International Iron Man, the new Iron Man series from Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Superman: Doomed #1 (DC Comics)
The big Superman event of the summer starts off with this week’s Superman: Doomed. Written by Charles Soule, Scott Lobdell, and Greg Pak (aka the guys writing Superman/Wonder Woman, Superman, and Action Comics respectively) with art by Ken Lashley, this one-shot finds Superman going to battle with a new and improved version of Doomsday, the creature that killed him years ago.
Or did he? This issue never gives us a clear “yes” or “no” as to if the “Death of Superman” storyline happened in the “New 52” DC universe. They do mention that Superman has met Doomsday before and show the Doomsday we’re all used to, but never come out and say if Superman was killed or not in the new rebooted universe. Despite this, I found this issue to be pretty cool, and I love this new take on Doomsday. No longer just a really strong monster, this new Doomsday is a true embodiment of death that literally sucks the life out of everything around him. When he first appears in the Bahamas at the beginning of this issue, he’s surrounded by burning grass and forests, and has already killed thousands of people. Read the rest of this entry
