It seems like every few years we get another take on the Man of Steel’s origin. Sometimes it’s a part of an ongoing story line, other times it’s a passion project. But I can’t think of a Superman origin story this high a pedigree on the creative side: Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. A new spin on the early days of Superman, Superman: Year One is a brand new installment of DC’s Black Label line of titles. For a tale that’s been told hundreds of thousands of times, every time a new Superman origin is told it has to have a new twist on the story of Kal-El’s arrival on Earth. DC’s Black Label imprint got off to a pretty shaky start with the release of Batman: Damned last year, but it’s now set to release another monster (though probably less controversial) hit with Batman: Last Knight on Earth. Re-teaming the legendary duo of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, the newest installment of the imprint finds the Dark Knight in a mysterious wasteland world, with no memory of how he got there, what’s happened, and why he has the head of the Joker in a lantern. Comic Reviews: Batman: Damned and Return of Wolverine!

DC’s put a lot of hype behind their new “Black Label” imprint, which allows some of the best creatives at the company full creative freedom behind their vast stable of characters. There’s books from Frank Miller, Kelly Sue DeConnick, and John Ridley coming our way, but the first up is Batman: Damned, from Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo. DC has a lot of expectations for this line of books, with the hope that this line will birth a new Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns. While it remains to be seen if Damned will reach those levels of popularity and acclaim, it’s definitely off to an intriguing, if strange, start. Read the rest of this entry
