Summer Movie Preview!

imagesAnother year, another batch of Summer movies. Unlike last year, the 2017 Summer Movie season looks to be chock full of awesome flicks. From more installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Wonder Woman’s first feature film to the return of the monstrous Xenomorphs, there’s a ton of stuff of look forward to as the temperature outside rises. But what exactly should you really be waiting for? Well, lucky for you I’m here to help you figure out what movies to spend your hard earned cash on! And we’ll kick if off with the first movie to come our way…..

What else is there to say about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2? Everyone and their mother enjoyed the first one, much to the surprise of, well, everybody.  With one movie, this team of characters known only to the most hardcover Marvel zombies became household names and early signs are pointing to Vol 2 being even more of a smash than the first movie. We’ll see for ourselves soon enough.

The DCEU is still trucking along, critics and fans be damned. But while some are dreading the upcoming slate of movies that WB has planned, one movie that has a lot of people rooting for it is Wonder Woman. Diana Prince’s time on the silver screen has been a long time coming, and so far this looks to be the movie Wonder Woman deserves. Here’s hoping that this one is a win for DC fan boys, general audiences, and critics as well.

Is there a movie franchise with a more surprising quality level than the new Planet of the Apes movies? I certainly can’t think of one. Every movie in this newly rebooted franchise has been surprisingly awesome, and War looks to be the grand epic that the new movies have been building towards since Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released years ago. Andy Serkis is back as Caesar, who’s now fully at war with the humans. Serkis has given astounding performances in the previous Apes movies, so much so that there’s been a big groundswell in getting the actor an Academy Award nomination. With War For The Planet of the Apes, he might even get it.

Spider-Man: Homecomingindex

This really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Yes, the idea of casting a new actor as Spider-Man and putting him back in high school is a little lame, but the sheer fact that Spidey is now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is more than enough to get me excited for this movie. After years of seeing Spider-Man swing around through an ALMOST there version of New York City, Spidey will be able not only swing through a New York City that has major Marvel landmarks, he’ll be interacting with other Marvel characters as well. After stealing the show in Captain America: Civil War, I can’t wait to see Tom Holland’s take on the wall crawler in greater detail. Add in Michael Keaton’s Vulture, who looks to be more of a threat than he’s ever been in the comics, and Homecoming is easily my “Most Anticipated” of the Summer. July 7 can’t come soon enough.

So what if Prometheus wasn’t the Alien prequel we were expecting (or advertised)? Ridley Scott’s sequel/prequel has real deal Xenomorphs this time! Plus the cast and early trailers for Covenant are pretty interesting (come on, who doesn’t want to see Danny McBride take on some Aliens). I’m really intrigued to see what Scott does with this film, especially after the response to Prometheus. I’ve waited a long time to see the Xenomorphs again (no the Alien Vs Predator movies don’t count). Here’s hoping they’re worth the wait.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No TalesMV5BMTYyMTcxNzc5M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTg2ODE2MTI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_

Look, I love Pirates, and that love extends to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. No, they’re not the best movies, and some are certainly bloated, but I love the world this franchise has created. The best Pirates movies are the kind of high adventure movies that Hollywood simply doesn’t make anymore, and the early buzz for this fifth installment has been surprisingly positive. While I’m hesitant over how this film will do after such a long gap between this film and the previous one, I’m still intrigued by another go with Captain Jack Sparrow, so if they announce Pirates of the Caribbean 6 after this one you’ll know who to blame.

As one of the few directors who are allowed to do original work, Christopher Nolan has tackled a lot of different genres. But now he’s entering into the genre that many directors have done before: the World War II movie. However, Nolan is focusing on a smaller aspect of WWII, the Battle of Dunkirk. There’s certainly a lot of hype surrounding this movie, and it’s already gaining a lot of Oscar buzz. Nolan is a very gifted filmmaker, and one of my favorites, so naturally I can’t wait to see what he brings to this genre.

Dark TowerThe_Dark_Tower_teaser_poster

Woooo boy, here we go. I love the Dark Tower series, and I’ve been waiting for someone, anyone, to adapt Stephen King’s magnum opus. While I’m still under the opinion that Dark Tower should be a television show instead of a movie, I’ll admit that I’m still intrigued by this movie, even with Sony making it. Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey are no slouches in the acting department, and the fact that this film is allegedly serving as a sequel to the original books instead of a direct adaptation has definitely ensured that I’ll be buying a ticket. But the fact that we’re just over 3 months away from this movie’s release and haven’t even seen a teaser trailer doesn’t fill me with a lot of hope….

Edgar Wright is easily one of the best living directors of this generation, and Baby Driver looks like something completely different from his previous films. Now that the Cornetto Trilogy is complete, Wright is free to do whatever he wants, and “whatever he wants’ is apparently a car chase movie with a character named Baby who listens to a rockin’ soundtrack while driving. Judging by the trailers and early buzz, this movie looks like a blast. In fact, the early reviews from SXSW have been so positive that the studio moved the release UP so more people will check it out. Here’s hoping the audience shows up for Wright this time around.
