A Time For Injustice
E3 has hit, and with it, confirmation of the worst kept secret in videogames: Injustice 2. Rumors of a sequel to NetherRealm’s hit DC fighting game have been swirling for a few months now, and we finally have confirmation that a second installment is coming our way in 2017. As a big fan of the original game, news of the sequel is very awesome, and when I saw the first game play footage, my jaw hit the floor. Why? Because the cast of this game is friggin’ NUTS.
The roster for the first Injustice game was pretty diverse, with characters ranging from Batman and Superman to lesser-known characters like Killer Frost and Ares. When you threw in the DLC, you got awesome characters like Batgirl and Lobo as well. But Injustice 2 features Supergirl, Atrocitus, and Gorrilla Grodd. Again. GORILLA GRODD is in this game. That alone should make you super pumped for this. Still need convincing? How about the fact that Atrocitus also has Dex-Star the Red Lantern Cat floating around him? It’s touches like this that makes the Injustice games super cool, and real treats for comic fans.
While Supergirl, Gorilla Grodd, and Atrocitus are the only characters confirmed so far, I can’t believe that they’re going to be the only new characters in this game. Of all of the DC characters available to NetherRealm, I’m really holding out for Red Hood, Damian Wayne, and Captain Cold. Red Hood was rumored to be part of the DLC that was eventually scrapped from the first Injustice, and his profile as a character has only grown since the first game came out. Damian Wayne, while technically being in the first game, could still make an appearance in this game, especially if it doesn’t take place in the alternate reality from Injustice. And Captain Cold? Well that’s just cause I want some DLC with Wentworth Miller’s take on the character from Flash.
Aside from the new characters, NetherRealm has released very few details regarding the game. Really the only major points they’ve released is that this new Injustice will feature customizable armor that will enhance your characters in ways that you like best. While there isn’t a ton of information on this (and the armor looks kinda dumb), it does sound a little interesting, and would be a good way to differentiate this game from the one that came before it. As much as I liked the “face offs” in Injustice, they did get pretty annoying the more you played the game. Using this customizable armor and characters is a cool way to make the game more “personable”, and could make for some interesting match-ups online.
While Injustice 2 wasn’t a huge surprise, it’s nice to know that it’s coming. Yes, it may be strange to embrace this game and also complain about the WB DC movies being “too dark”, I feel like this approach to a fighting game works really well. At the very least, it’ll be fun to kick people’s asses as Aquaman again.
