Summer Movie Preview!
It’s almost time to bust out the shorts and t-shirts, cause Summer is coming! And what’s the best part about the Summer? No, not the sunburns, the movies! We’ve got a smattering of pretty great cinematic offering this year; so let’s take a look at what I’m most looking forward to in this year’s SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW!!!!
Captain America: Civil War
Arguably the biggest movie to hit this Summer, Captain America: Civil War has almost as much hype as a new Avengers movie, which is pretty fitting, since the amount of side characters in this bad boy would make you think that this is Avengers 3 at first glance. But no, this film that also features Iron Man, Black Panther, and the debut of the new MCU Spider-Man is a Captain America film first and foremost, and it looks to change up the MCU in a pretty big way. Here’s hoping it can live up to the already insurmountable hype.
Don’t forget, Fox has an X-Men movie coming out this summer. Sure, Apocalypse looks a little too much like Ivan Ooze, and this seems more like a “Mystique and the X-Men” movie than a legit X-Men movie, but director Bryan Singer’s latest jump back into the world of mutants still has potential to be great. No X-Men movie has had stellar trailers, but with Singer back behind the camera, I’m confident that this will still be pretty good (despite the fact that Olivia Munn is in it).
The Nice Guys
Who knew that Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe would have so much awesome chemistry? These two look like they could be the new Will Ferrell and John C Reilly (or at least the new Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill). Judging from the trailers, it looks like Shane Black’s The Nice Guys will be a great 70’s goofball caper, with plenty of laughs and action beats. I think I’ve watched the trailer at least once a day since it was released.
Independence Day: Resurgence
Yeah, I’m just as surprised as you are. From the moment a sequel to Independence Day was announced, my first reaction was “don’t care”. But now that I’ve seen the trailers, I have to admit I’m intrigued. Getting Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldbum back is pretty awesome, and hearing the famous speech from the first movie in the trailer hit all the right nostalgia buttons. At the very least, Jeff Goldblum will probably say “must go faster” again, which is worth the price of admission.
Yes, I still hate the Joker’s tattoos, but if I can be completely honest, the more I see of Suicide Squad, the more intrigued I become by it. David Ayer’s take on the villains trying to be heroes looks like a ton of fun, and Margot Robie’s Harley Quinn looks like she’ll steal the show completely. After the bummer of Batman V Superman, Suicide Squad might be the cure for WB’s DC woes.
I love the Jason Bourne movies, even though they aren’t the first movies I think of when I think of spy movies. In fact, I almost forgot to include this movie in the preview! But with series director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon returning, I’m pretty excited to see Jason Bourne beat the crap out of people in new and entertaining ways. Plus, if this does well enough, maybe my dream of seeing Bourne fight John Wick will come true!
Star Trek Beyond
The third movie in the rebooted Star Trek movie franchise is either going to be awesome or really, really dumb. Justin Lin has done some awesome action work in the Fast And The Furious franchise, but can he work similar magic on Capt. Kirk and Co? I don’t know, but I do know that Idris Elba as the villain for this movie makes me super pumped.
