2016 Nerd Preview!

maxresdefault2015 is in the rearview, and now it’s full steam ahead to 2016. If you thought 2015 had a ton of crazy nerd stuff heading your way, just wait till you see what 2016 has up its sleeve. With so much stuff coming out, it’s a little overwhelming. What’s that? You want my help? Well, I’m glad you asked! Without further ado, here’s the stuff I’m most looking forward to in 2016!

Batman V SupermanBatman-Superman-movie-logo

Easily the comic book movie that I’m the most excited/worried about is Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. There’s a lot riding on this movie, and if it doesn’t work, it could cripple everything WB has planned for their DC Cinematic Universe. But if it works, it could finally be the competition that Marvel Studios needs. While there’s some things in the newest trailer that makes me question the movie, I still think Ben Affleck is going to be awesome as Batman, and I can’t deny my inner five year old the chance to see Batman and Superman battling it out.

On the Marvel Studios side o things, the biggest film to come from their studio this year is Captain America: Civil War, a film that will feature the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s big two heroes (in this case Captain America and Iron Man) duking it out over a Government Registration Act for superheroes. While we know that Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s Civil War is the “spine” of the movie, it’s clearly not going to follow that story to the letter. But man, that new trailer is pretty damn awesome. I’d be chomping at the bit for it even if it wasn’t going to feature the MCU debut of Spider-Man.

Marvel Studios’ small screen output is on my radar too, with the return of Matt Murdock to Netflix. This season will see the introduction of Elektra and a certain character named The Punisher, and all signs are pointing to this series being darker, more action packed, and better than the first. Wilson Fisk’s shoes will be tough to fill, but Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle will most certainly do the trick.

I’ve been slowly catching up on Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Brian Michael Bendis’ ongoing tale of Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of the ultimate universe. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to be waiting to jump into Bendis and Sarah Pichelli’s Spider-Man, which finds Morales in the regular 616 universes after the events of Secret Wars. Morales is a character that’s very close to Brian Michael Bendis, and while I’m not entirely sure how we’ll have two Spider-Men running around the Marvel universe, I’m still pretty excited for how it’s going to happen.

Doctor StrangeMystical-Strange-005-EW

This November brings one of the most insane Marvel Studios productions ever: Doctor Strange. Even thought it boasts the mighty Benedict Cumberbatch in a starring role, this is going to be a pretty big gamble for Marvel. While we can all point to Guardians of the Galaxy whenever this is said, Stephen Strange’s solo film is going to introduce a whole new section of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and like Batman V Superman, if it doesn’t work, it could be a major stumble for the studio. Thankfully it doesn’t look like this will happen, as those Entertainment Weekly photos are absolutely stellar.

X-Men_-_ApocalypseX-Men: Apocalypse

Sure, they may not be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn’t mean that the X-Men have to take a back seat at the movies! This summer brings arguably the biggest and most requested X-Men baddie to the multiplex: Apocalypse. While the big bad (played by Force Awakens’ Oscar Isaac) doesn’t look exactly like his comic book counterpart, Isaac is a great actor who will hopefully do the villain justice. Add in the return of Michael Fassbender’s Magneto and I’m already lining up for my ticket.

Deadpool is the long-gestating movie starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. So far we’ve seen tons of trailers, promo images, and even Emojis to hype up the film, and I’m still shocked that this movie is on the way. Hopefully the insane madcap action we’ve seen in the trailers is just as fun in feature length form.

We all know my thoughts on Jared Leto’s tattooed Joker. While they’ve lessened, I’m still not thrilled with the design, but I’m still curious about this film. As the second DC Cinematic Universe film, Suicide Squad has the potential to show us how different the DC movies will be from the Marvel ones, and I’m really excited to see Harley Quinn’s movie debut. Hopefully it’s worth it (and Joker loses the tats).

Rogue One: A Star Wars Storyrogue-one-cast-photo-d23-1024x682

What? You thought you had to wait until Episode 8 for more Star Wars? Oh no my friend. 2016 brings us the first of the “anthology” Star Wars films, which will feature different stories from throughout the Star Wars timeline. Rogue One features the first Rebel fighters who stole the Death Star plans. The cast for this film is pretty insane, with Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, and even Mads Mikkelson in the cast, and so far the few images we’ve seen show a much grittier aspect of the Star Wars universe. I can’t wait to see the first of these movies, and hopefully it lives up to the hype.
