Comic Con 2015 Wrap-Up!

sdcc_logoI’ll be honest; I didn’t think there was going to be much to get me excited at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. With the exception of the WB panel, there didn’t seem to be a lot of hype going out pre-show. Marvel Studios wasn’t going, Disney wasn’t going to premiere a new Force Awakens trailer, and many of the comics publishers had announced their big publishing movements BEFORE the event even kicked off. It just seemed like SDCC 2015 was going to be a big bore.

Man, was I wrong. From a spectacular Batman V Superman trailer to news of two of some of my favorite comic book characters crossing over, there was tons of awesome stuff to come out of Comic Con this year. And we’ll kick it off with a team-up book I’ve been clamoring for since 2007…

One of the biggest surprises to come out of the con was the announcement of a Spider-Man & Deadpool team up book. An even bigger surprise? The series will reunite Joe Kelly and Ed McGuinnes, the team that was behind the first Deadpool series almost a decade ago. Kelly wrote the hilarious Spidey/Deadpool team up in Amazing Spider-Man #611 back during the “Brand New Day” era, and Ed McGuinness is arguably the best Deadpool artist around (sorry Rob Liefeld). I have high hopes for this series, but nothing’s been released aside from the title and the first image. Hopefully we get more info soon.

Speaking of the Merc With A Mouth, this SDCC saw the first ever footage from the upcoming Deadpool movie, and holy crap guys, it’s really happening. I’ve never thought that Wade Wilson’s movie would ever see the light of day, and now that it’s happening (with Ryan Reynolds no less), my excitement grows even more. If you haven’t seen it yet, new official footage should be out in a few weeks. Just take my word for it though, it’s awesome.

The big rumor going into San Diego this year was that WB was going to “own Hall H” with their presentation, which included Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman. And now that the dust is settled, they’ve definitely left a HUGE impression on the general public. While I’ve still got some lingering story doubts, that Batman V Superman trailer has sold me, and there were a ton of shots from that trailer that made me flip out: Bruce Wayne running into the smoke of a falling building, Robin’s tattered costume, seemingly grafittied by the Joker, and Wonder Woman on the big screen. Batman V Superman definitely brought the goods, and has solidified its place on the “Must-See” list for 2016.

The upcoming Starz series is going to rock. With Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell back on board, this much I know is true. But when I FINALLY saw the trailer for Ash vs. Evil Dead I was blown away. Bruce Campbell looks incredible as Ash, and the tone seems to fit right in with Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. It’s safe to say that I’ll be calling up my cable guy to get Starz set up before Halloween hits.

The award for the craziest comic con news definitely goes to IDW and DC’s announced crossover between Batman and the Ninja Turtles. This is one of those ideas that’s so bonkers that it just might work. No, it WILL work. I’m beyond excited for this series to hit in November, and the fact that we know nothing about the series makes me even more excited. Batman teaming up with the Ninja Turtles. Insane.

I honestly don’t think there was a dry eye in the house after Lucasfilm aired their behind the scenes video for Force Awakens. Yeah, it wasn’t a new trailer, but it showed a ton of awesome stuff, from Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia to more shots of old Han walking around the Falcon. Simply put, if that video didn’t stir something inside of you, you’re probably dead inside.
