Hello, Mr. Luthor

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly, we finally have our look at Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. And he looks pretty much exactly how we all expected him to. He’s bald, smug, and looks pretty sinister. If I was judging Eisenberg on looks alone, I’d say he’s going to be an awesome fit.

However, we can’t just judge an actor on how they look. We gotta look into that whole “acting” thing, and that’s where my main concerns about Eisenberg as Luthor come in. His most well known role is as Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook. Now granted, a Zuckerberg-esque Luthor would be pretty interesting, but at the same time, Zuckerberg was never very intimidating. He was an arrogant a-hole, sure, but intimidating? Not really,

It may seem like I’m knocking Zuckerberg, but I do think it’s possible that he could be awesome as Lex. But I want to know which version of Luthor we’re going to get in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. I really, really, really, REALLY hope that we’re done with the Luthor that declares he’s the “World’s greatest criminal mind” yet still hangs out with complete idiots. Not even the fantastic Kevin Spacey could get over that character flaw in Superman Returns (while we’re at it, let’s not have him try and pull a real estate scheme too).

The Luthor I want to see on screen is the one that’s currently in Geoff Johns’ Justice League right now. If you haven’t been reading it, first, you’re missing out. Second, it’s one of the greatest superhero books out there right now, and much of that has been because Luthor has joined the team because he feels like he earned the right after fighting off the Crime Syndicate’s takeover of Earth (he’s also using the fact that he knows Bruce Wayne is Batman as a bartering chip). This Lex is super intelligent, resourceful, and more times than not, actually right in the end. He’s the take on the character that I know a lot of us comic fans would love to see on screen.

In the press release that was attached to the image, Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder stated that this Lex is “ not any of the Lexes that you’ve seen, that’s for sure, other than him being a captain of industry and one person to the world and another person to himself. And bald, of course.” That sounds like something in line with what I’m hoping for in Dawn of Justice, but until I see some footage of Eisenberg in action, I won’t know for sure. While I’ll always wish that Bryan Cranston or Billy Zane were cast as Lex, I’m cautiously optimistic that Eisenberg could be pretty awesome in the role.

Could be.
