BatFleck Rises

BatFleckThe first official image of Ben Affleck as Batman has been released, and holy shit, do I love it. My feelings on Batman vs. Superman/Man of Steel 2/Justice League ½  have been well documented in the past, but this definitely increased the movie’s stock in my mind a little bit. I mean, LOOK at that costume. Just look at it! It’s easily the closest thing to Batman’s actual comic book costume that we’ve gotten in real life, and it surprisingly looks fantastic.

Batman’s costumes in movies past have been pretty good (with one nippley exception), but it took him until 2008 to finally be able to move his damn neck. With the new “BatFleck” suit, we finally have a Batman movie costume that actually LOOKS like the Dark Knight running around in the funnybooks month in and month out . And I love it.

It doesn’t take much to notice the obvious nods to Frank Miller’s classic The Dark Knight Returns in that suit. The shorter ears, the giant bat logo on the chest, it’s very much in the vein of Miller’s work on the character, and even some Year One David Mazzucchelli too. However, and maybe it’s just me, but there looks to be some Jim Lee in there as well.  Batman’s costume that debuted in the “Hush” story line isn’t too far off from Miller’s version of the costume, it’s got the same short ears and huge bat. I also won’t lie and say that I haven’t zoomed in on the pic and noticed that it has similar lines on it that resemble the Dark Knight’s “New 52” duds.

Of course there are already people cropping up online crapping all over the thing.  Which is fine, to each their own. But come on, you can’t say that Affleck doesn’t look wicked impressive in that suit (although you can argue that anyone could be wearing a Batman suit and look awesome). As for me, I think he looks fantastic, and I still believe in Affleck. At the very least I can take solace that even if Man of Steel 2/Batman vs. Superman  ends up being a complete mess, Batman will look awesome in it.
