You Don’t Get 500 Million Pounds of Kryptonite Without Making A Few Enemies
There’s a sentence I never thought I’d write. Yes, the Social Network star has been cast as Superman’s arch nemesis in the follow up to Man of Steel. And no, you’re not dreaming. For the first time since, well, the last casting announcement for Man of Steel 2/Batman vs. Superman/Whateveritwillbecalled I’m left with a “wha?” reaction. In fact, I believe the first words out of my mouth when I heard it were “that’s not true”.
It’s not that I dislike Eisenberg as an actor. I actually don’t mind him at all, and really enjoyed him in the already mentioned Social Network and in Zombieland. But as Lex Luthor? Really? There are at least a dozen other actors that I could think of that would’ve been interesting choices for the role, but who knows, maybe this could turn into another Heath Ledger Joker scenario.
The casting of Eisenberg also speaks to what angle they’re taking Lex in this film. Amazingly to me, he’s the same age as Henry Cavill, so we won’t have a younger than Superman Lex, just one who LOOKS younger. It does make me wonder if we’ll be looking at a Luthor who’s a Mark Zuckerberg-like wunderkind, who rose to power at a young age at the expense of his friendships and allies. To be honest, if you look at the way Mark Zuckerberg is depicted in Social Network, you can kind of see shades of Lex in that performance.
Looking at pictures of the guy, you can get a pretty good idea of what he’d look like as Lex (time to get out that razor buddy). So far it seems like the internet reaction is, well, the same reaction anytime we get a major comic book casting announcement: ¾ rage, ¼ positive, and a small minority of rational thoughts. While I may have wanted to see Bryan Cranston, Jon Hamm, Billy (effin’) Zane, or even The Rock as Lex, I’m now way more curious as to how this iconic villain is going to be brought to the screen. My only real complaint about Eisenberg as Luthor is his voice. Unless he’s hiding some hidden fury from us, he doesn’t really carry a really commanding or threatening presence, something that’s required when Lex’s plans inevitably fall apart and he has to take it out on someone.
So he’s not my first choice. Or my second. Or my third. Or even my tenth. But maybe, just maybe Eisenberg will do something really cool with the role. Of course, this doesn’t put my fears of too many characters destroying the movie to bed, but at least we finally know who’s playing Lex. And Alfred for that matter (Jeremy Irons-HELL YES!).
So internet, let’s sit back, and try to wait until some official images or a trailer are released before going thermonuclear, okay? *
*Eh, whatver. You’ll probably all rage out over this anyways.
